From prison Manette headed west
For fear of the Bastille’s unrest,
While Paris was tumbling
and London was grumbling
that the times were the worst and the best.
I think that tidies it up a trifle! Enjoyed that, thanks.
I always knew Dickens was a bit gloomy, but condensing all that misery into a limerick is a stroke of absolute genius. It is actually a little scary how accurate this is considering it took me three attempts to get through the actual book without falling asleep. I think I prefer this version because it gets straight to the point without the need for fifty pages of description about a foggy street. Do you think the classics would be more popular if we just summarized them all like this?
Good one. Limericks are fun.

This is amusing but it is not a limerick per se. It doesn’t scan to the limerick rhythm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limerick_(poetry)

Literary gems get such kickings,
Reduced to such very slim pickings:
When TV and movies
Gut what’s true, jeez,
Who’d wish to be Austen or Dickens?
