Ah, so that’s how it happend. Must also be how we changed the word “boot” (car part) to “trunk.”

And reverse the R and E in a bunch more. While we’re at it, let’s turn some Ss into Zs too, just to mess with them
And pronounce “God” more like “Guard”.

It’s one reason why non-english speaking people think our language is a mess,
Contrary to the beliefs, American English is the more original version of the language. I have only read Bryson, but he usually does some thorough background checks. The Mother Tongue: English and How it got that way
