Thankfully, I’ve only “met” guys like the one in Panel Three online; all the people I know “IRL” are not Apollo skeptics. And I was six in 1969, so I have vague but real memories of the Moon landing.

I remember it as well. I was very young, but it stuck with me. My grandfather (who was born in the late 1800s) kept saying that he never thought he would live to see such a miraculous thing.

Of course, most of my “real” memories of July 20, 1969 have been “overwritten” by all the documentaries about the Apollo program that I’ve seen or owned since then. I do recall that we lived in Colombia, and all of the newscasts in Bogota were (a) in black-and-white and (b) in Spanish. But when I “remember” Apollo 11, my mind is full of clips in English and in color.
My maternal grands were also born in the late 1800s. They said pretty much the same thing that your grandfather did!
Thanks for sharing your memories of Apollo 11, John.

…no matter how silly and far-fetched.

I was in my mid-teens at the time of the first landing and remember rushing home to see mankind take the first steps. However I also remember that claims already came within a couple of years that it was a put on especially when the program was cancelled after so few missions and all we got was some rocks. The movie Capricorn One, though not about the moon specifically, was filmed less than 10 years afterward to cater to the doubters of the time.

Bravo M. WrongHands! I love ‘pretend space’ reference! Chef’s kiss.
Surprisingly, despite grainy B&W, all countries collectively held their breath that night in July 1969. It was seen as a mankind achievement – as when the crew toured the world.
I used to believe the interweb would be a vehicle of good… Nostalgic sigh.

It was indeed a global event.

So true (yes that was facetious). The worst of the “it didn’t happen” claims is the school shootings. How hurtful and angering that claim must be.

Yes. Conspiracy mongers are always searching for something fantastical to make the world feel less random and more calculated. It’s also a very sad indictment of the education system.

Of course it is false, everyone knows that the Earth is ……… (insert on the dotted line any stupid idea you can think of).
